Nella storia delle ricerche geologiche nell’area romana a metà dell’Ottocento, la figura trainante fu senza dubbio Giuseppe Ponzi (1805-1888), professore di mineralogia e poi di geologia presso l’Archiginnasio pontificio. Intorno al 1840 egli intraprese studi sistematici del territorio circostante Roma, stimolando la crescita di una moderna scuola geologica.
